Fiction is an essential part of individual life. Man has an inherent demand for diversion to get away, even though for a few moments, from the humdrum of life. Story telling has been one of the first ways of accomplishing that and over the ages it has become the diverse forms of entertainment we’ve got in today’s world. Entertainment is essentially of two kinds – active and passive. The active entails physical participation in 1 way or other, while the passive does not. Fiction is essentially a passive entertainment though the mind has an important part within it. Fiction constantly involves visualization whether it’s covert or overt. The first type of overt visualization has been that the enacting of dramas since the civilizations developed. The development of technology brought in its modern forms – cinema and television. The key type is inherent to story telling and reading. It is an inherent feature of the human (or perhaps any) mind a thought is always accompanied by an image. So when one reads or hears a story the mind visualizes the scene and the characters; this process continues throughout the story and often even after it’s ended.
Character growth can be one of the most important things about science fiction. You want to produce a realistic group of personalities to move your plot together and to do this you need to understand them. But how much can you really have to know about them before you start composing?
Well, that depends on the kind of story you are writing. The length of your narrative will dictate the quantity of character information you will need to create them come to life. Fiction by its very definition is unreal. After we see a novel we are aware that the narrative and the characters in it are only a product of imagination of the author. When we view a movie we know that the characters are only acting their parts essentially pretending to be somebody besides themselves. Still we are mentally affected by the turns and twists in the narrative. We laugh, weep with them, and even sense indignant towards the bad guys. The adorable hero or heroine might be despicable in real life and the protagonist may be a perfect gentleman, but we identify them using all the characters they are portraying. In essence for that short period we get hauled into the imaginary world of the author. Strangely enough this happens too with the author at least to some of these. He or she goes through the same emotions while writing and possibly later also. We consider the above thoughts and suggestions must be taken into account in any discussion on right here. Someone who has never been outside a remote location in jungle and has no contact with the world outside cannot imagine what metropolitan cities would be like.
Getting back to fiction that the imagination of the author also must be based on his direct or indirect encounters. In this sense fiction relies on fact and to that extent it represents another dimension of reality. Here of course we run into the philosophical problem of the exact significance of reality. You will find two diametrically opposite views – materialistic and spiritualistic. In accordance with the former only things that can be perceived through our senses are real, everything else is unreal. The latter maintains that there is just one ultimate fact from which all that we perceive comes out and everything that is perceived is only an illusion. We consider a statement by Einstein: “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.” He was clearly referring to the fact of the phenomenal world. The word illusion can have different connotations but in general it means perceiving something rather different from what it is. Therefore the presence of the thing is a prerequisite for illusion, it is not a mental construction. Imagination is purely a mental phenomenon and has nothing to do with whatever really existent. Therefore the relationship between fiction and reality is completely different from that between illusion and reality. It does take some time to write a complete story for any kind of book.
At a philosophical sense that the incredible world itself may be considered fiction. That is what Shakespeare possibly meant when he wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all women and men merely players”. We may also think of everything in the universe (space, time, matter) as gamers because everything has its own entry and exit. It is not only a philosophical point either. We invest a considerable part of our life from the imagined or fictional world. We muse about the items in long run and also live over the past imagining what might have been. The imagination about the future is based on our hopes and ambitions and also to some extent it’s a positive in the sense that we are in a position to mould our future when we sincerely try. But musing over the past is really a futile exercise because we all know for a fact that ‘what might have been’ is only fantasy that never happened. Nevertheless it serves the exact same purpose as fiction from the perspective of entertainment. We entertain ourselves by imagining how life would have been, knowing fully well that it has no fact whatsoever. In a metaphorical sense past, at the distant past, is fiction. At a certain sense history is fiction since it invariably includes the subjective bias of the author. What we understand of Buddha and Jesus now is much more fiction than facts.
